Thursday morning we got up and started out for our Hana trip. Hana is a tiny town located on the southeast side of the island, and the Hana Highway, or "road to Hana" is a fun road trip.
There is MUCH to do, and the trip could easily be split into two days, but we decided to just hit the highlights so we could return back to our condo that night. We chose some of the same stops as last time we were there, and others that were new to us. It's really hard to pick and choose, but there is just no way to fit everything in!
Our first stop was at Hai'pua'ena Falls.

There has not been much rain recently, so it was not very big. But still, a fun stop.

Next, we stopped at Ching's Pond. This place is popular with the locals. Each time we have been there, we've been able to enjoy watch their bridge jumping.

Jeremiah got right in and said it was "refreshing". To the rest of us, that means it was freezing!

He convinced my brave and adventurous daughter to jump in.

It took her breath away! She immediately turned and scrambled back out.

The look on her face was enough to tell me I didn't want to get in. :-)

Eventually, Carolyn got back in. Aaron dove in and swam as well.

Then we were on our way again. There were many beautiful overlooks and loads if wonderful scenery along the way.

Some of the kids took a little nap as we drove.

When we stopped at Wai'anapanapa State Park for our picnic lunch, we encountered several of these interesting little creatures. Of course, Carolyn LOVED watching them!

Our picnic spot was so lovely.

This is an overlook on the trail down to the black sand beach. You can see part of the beach behind us on the right side of the picture.

Same overlook, different direction. Beautiful lava rock!

There were lava tubes here.

Some parts of the beach have sand, other patches are pebbles, and there are parts where the beach is comprised of fairly good sized, smooth, black rocks. There is such a beautiful sound made when the water recedes back down over this beach.

Kylie thought it was interesting that people had carved into this plant.

Jeremiah and Isaiah are such good buddies!

The next stop was at Venus pool. On the trail down, we saw this ancient oven, and the kids all climbed in.

The Venus Pool is a beautiful, protected fresh-water pool/waterfall right next to the ocean. Due to limited rainfall, the waterfall was not running, but it was still a beautiful place!

Isaiah loved running free through this field.

We stopped at the cemetery where Charles Lindbergh was buried.

Carolyn found this enormous leaf.

There were horses in an adjacent field, so we got out our bag of carrots from our picnic, and the kids enjoyed feeding them to the horses.

We hurried on to the Seven Sacred Pools, which was to be our last stop of the day before heading around the south side of the island and back up the west side to our condo. But due to very little rainfall in the past few months, the pools were stagnant and had no water flowing. We were bummed, but what can you do?
We were able to watch the sun set as we finished our drive.
